Tumblin’ Trend: Rockabilly

Sometimes the hottest trend is one item of clothing, other times it is a color or hue that everyone is wearing. Trends can also be from a whole era in history, and that’s exactly what’s going on with rockabilly coming back in fashion. Rockabilly was an early style of rock and roll from the 1950s. The term comes from a mix of “rock” and “hillbilly”, with hillbilly being linked to the country music influence in early rock and roll. Those of you who have seen Hairspray, or any early Elvis movies should know exactly what I’m talking about. Well I’ll give you a quick rundown of what this trend means for men and women in these last days of summer and on in to fall.

Ladies: Rockabilly for women is all about prints, full skirts and pin-up silhouettes. And elaborate, sky-high hairstyles ruled back in the rebel 1950s.

Polka dots, leopard, stripes, red/black/white combos, red lips, long lashes – a rockabilly girl is made up at all times. Youtube is a great place to get some “pin-up girl” hair tutorials and make-up ideas.

Gentleman: No pants were left loose or uncuffed in the early days of rock and roll. Think Grease. Rockabilly men keep it fitted and cool – leather jackets, great pair of shades and slicked back hair.

Cropped pants are huge with this trend. Pair them with a pair of oxfords, wingtips or loafers and you will be right in line this fall.

So ABSers, what do you think about this rebirth of rockabilly? See some pieces you could pull for you 50s inspired wardrobe?

Have a great day :-)
